Stamps Dealt Blow Against Alouettes

The Stampeders playoff hopes took a blow Saturday afternoon at McMahon as they fell to the Montreal Alouettes 28-11.

The loss drops the Stamps to 4-10. They stay two games back of the Saskatchewan Roughriders for third in the west with four games remaining.

QB Jake Maier – 29-for-37 for 271-yards, one touchdown, two interceptions.

RB Ka’Deem Carey – 10 rushes for 70-yards.

REC Reggie Begelton – 13 receptions for 109-yards, one touchdown.

DB Nick Statz – One interception.

The Stamps strung together a good opening drive into Alouettes territory but former Stampeder, Shawn Lemon, intercepted Maier to snuff out the momentum.

The two teams couldn’t put together a drive following the interception and the game was scoreless heading into the second-quarter.

The Alouettes got the first points of the afternoon. They found the endzone thanks, in part, to a 25-yard spearing penalty against the Stampeders. The score was 7-0.

Calgary found their footing late in the half as they put together a good drive through the air and ending it with a short pass from Maier to Begelton to make the score 7-7.

The Alouettes added a single on a punt with just under two-minutes minutes to go in the half to make the score 8-7.

The Stampeders got a single of their own on a long punt from Cody Grace to even up the score 8-8 with 1:05 remaining in the half.

Montreal got into field-goal range and hit a 45-yard field-goal to send give them the 11-8 lead late in the second-quarter.

Calgary had a couple of plays to get into field-goal range. He missed from 48-yards out giving the Alouettes the 11-8 halftime lead.

Hometown kid Nick Statz came up with a huge interception for the Stampeders on the Alouettes first possession of the second-half. Unfortunately, the drive ended on third-down with an interception in the endzone.

The Als got to the Calgary one-yardline after the turnover with a 51-yard pass which was followed up by a plunge into the endzone to make the score 18-8.

Maier found Begelton for a 17-yard gain which put Reggie over 1000-yards receiving on the season and also led to a Stampeders field-goal to make the score 18-11 at the beginning of the fourth-quarter.

Montreal came back the other way with three of their own to make the score 21-11 with 8:44 to go in the game.

Maier found Begelton, leading into Montreal territory but the ball way punched out and recovered by the Alouettes leading to another touchdown to make the score 28-11 with just over two-minutes remaining in the game.

The Stampeders got as far as mid-field before not being able to come up with a first-down on third-down to turn the ball over on downs and essentially end the game.
