Cote’s memories at McMahon

On Nov. 20, McMahon Stadium will be home to the 2016 Western Final that will feature the hometown Calgary Stampeders including Cochrane native and long-time CFL fan Rob Cote.

It’s no secret the prairies can be chilly at the best of times during November but it was those cooler temperatures that often created those magical memories Cote remembers fondly from his younger days.

One particular year that stands out for the long-time member of the Red and White is 1998’s Western Final in Calgary when the hated provincial rival Edmonton Eskimos trotted into town to subsequently be chased off the field, losing 33-10 to the Stampeders.

“I remember coming with my dad. He brought myself and my brother,” recalls Cote, who says there wasn’t necessarily one particular play that stood out to him from that game, but it was the experience that was more endearing.

“I remember just being there with the boys.

“When you’re a fan, it’s fun to see how many layers of clothes you can get on, bring the shake warmers or sock warmers.”

Cote and his family attended many games over the years and they’ve continued to do so as Cote has vacated the stands for the field, creating his own Western Final memories as a player.

Yet, it’s still those early experiences during cold prairie winters that stick out for him and he wants other fans to get the same chance to fall in love with a truly Canadian experience.

“We came to a lot of games with my family over the years.

“Now they have to go so come join them. Support us snow or shine. It’s going to be fun and we’re going to make some memories together.”

Be at McMahon on Sunday, Nov. 20 and create one more memory. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
