It’s almost been a week since the rookies first hit the field for training camp.
All the plays, cadences, motions get tossed at them rapid-fire style, before the veterans join them for the official start of training camp a couple of days later.
As the head coach and general manager of the Stampeders, John Hufnagel said he’s happy with here his team is at.
“We are right on schedule,” he said in regards to the installation of the offensive and defensive playbooks.
“Maybe not executing the way we would like but that’s what training camp is all about.”
After earning a slight reprieve yesterday with only one practice, the players were back on the field Thursday morning without pads, but with the same intensity.
“I was pleased,” Hufnagel said. “We were a little bit better with our assignments. We have some young receivers that are back on the field after nursing pulled muscles. There was a few mistakes by them, but for the most part it was a good practice.”
The players will have a few more sessions before their first mock game on Sunday afternoon.
In the early days of training camp, Canadian receiver Chris Bauman put on a show with an array of dazzling catches.
That came to an unfortunate end when the veteran suffered an injury.
“Unfortunately, he broke a small bone in his wrist,” said Hufnagel. “He’ll be in plaster for a while.”
Bauman joins fellow non-import Johnny Forzani on the list of injured Calgary pass-catchers.
Randy Chevrier, who celebrates his 37th birthday today, checks in with a Letter From Camp to tell you in his own words how much he’s enjoying working with the young players and trying to keep up with them.
During the afternoon practice, Bo Levi Mitchell went deep to hit speedy rookie Yannick Morin-Plante for a would-be touchdown.
The Stamps are on the field for two sessions on Friday, June 7. Practices run from 9:05 a.m. to approximately 10:55 a.m. and from 4:20 p.m. to approximately 6 p.m. As per league policy, ENG cameras will be permitted to shoot from approximately 9:05 to 9:25 a.m. during morning session and from 4:20 to 4:40 p.m. during afternoon practice.
