Double trouble

Bakari Grant saved the best for last on Saturday night.

After wiping out a fourth-quarter deficit at the Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium, Grant’s touchdown catch in double-overtime gave the Stamps their first and only lead.

An ensuing defensive stop clinched the victory for Calgary over the Edmonton Eskimos, as No. 81 wound up with the game-winning score.

“It’s huge,” commented Grant on the comeback victory away from home. “It’s a conference rival and the Labour Day rematch so it was already a big game. Things didn’t go our way necessarily in the first half but guys just kept pressing. It’s what we do.”

A slow start saw the Red and White down 17-3 at the break after only scrimmaging inside Edmonton’s 40-yard line on one occasion. But the second half was a drastically different story, as it was the Stampeders outscoring the Esks by a 14-point margin with a pair of touchdowns by DaVaris Daniels.

“I think we just stopped kicking ourselves,” Grant offered regarding the terrific turnaround. “Honestly, I think some of the penalties and dropped passes – I dropped a pass early – would have kept drives going. If we eliminate those, we’re even a tougher team to stop. We have a lot of weapons and we make plays.”

The six-foot-four Oakland, Calif., product finished up with six receptions for 89 yards including his 23-yard TD when it mattered most.

“It was just a corner-route and man-to-man defence,” described the six-year veteran. “I kind of just set it up like any other play. I don’t think it was any more or less important than our first touchdown, so I just ran the play like normal and Bo (Levi Mitchell) threw a great ball.”

Having now tallied a scoring major in back-to-back games and in three of the last four weeks, Grant now has four touchdowns in his first year with the Red and White. That figure is just one back of his career-high, set in 2012 as a member of the Ticats.

The Stamps were facing the Eskimos coming off just four days’ rest since their last meeting, and despite the Week 12 battle extending beyond regulation, the 29-year-old still managed to perform at a high level until the very end.

“I felt pretty fresh and I think most guys really picked it up (and finished strong),” the California-Davis alum offered. “We picked it up after starting a little bit slow and I think (head coach) Dave (Dickenson) does a really good job taking care of our bodies. I think that really helped us in the end.”
