Calgary Stampeders vs Ottawa RedBlacks
104th Grey Cup
BMO Field – Toronto
Sunday, Nov. 27
4:30 p.m. MST kickoff
On Sunday afternoon from Toronto’s BMO Field, the Calgary Stampeders will compete for the eighth championship in their 71-year history when they square off with the Ottawa RedBlacks for the 104th Grey Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. MST.
The Red and White will be making their third appearance in the championship game over the past five years. Meanwhile, the RedBlacks have qualified in back-to-back seasons after entering the league as an expansion team in 2014.
Calgary booked their ticket to Toronto following a 42-15 beatdown of the BC Lions in the Western Final at McMahon Stadium. Ottawa also finished atop their divisional standings (7-8-1) and secured a 35-23 triumph over the Esks in a snowy Eastern Final affair.
With a win on Sunday, the Stampeders would claim the best single-season record in CFL history with a potential final mark of 17-2-1.
In two head-to-head meetings this season, the Stamps settled for a tie with the RedBlacks at TD Place Stadium in Week 3 before posting their highest point total of 2016 to date with a decisive 48-23 home victory in Week 13.
Running back Jerome Messam, a Toronto native, will play in his first-ever Grey Cup game to conclude his seventh CFL campaign with his fifth different franchise. This year’s rushing crown and Most Outstanding Canadian award were both claimed by No. 33.
Ottawa had the sole offensive unit that converted each and every third-and-short scenario through Week 20.
Suiting up in his team-high fourth Grey Cup will be Brandon Smith, and the veteran defensive back has earned two rings in three tries thus far. RedBlacks’ quarterback Henry Burris will be active on a Grey Cup Sunday for the sixth time and won his two titles with the Stamps in 1998 and 2008.
Simon Charbonneau-Campeau, Randy Richards and Ucambre Williams are listed on Calgary’s 46-man roster in place of Brad Erdos, Osagie Odiase and Cam Thorn.
Key Matchup
Rookie middle linebacker Alex Singleton of the Stampeders will play a major role in shutting down RedBlacks’ sophomore running back Kienan Lafrance. Singleton, who took over the starting job from now-Ottawa defender Taylor Reed, recorded 65 defensive tackles, four knockdowns and three forced fumbles during the regular season. Lafrance exploded for 157 rushing yards in the Eastern Final, over 100 more yards than the Winnipeg native has ever tallied at the professional level.
