Looking to keep the streaks alive

Beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders is always great.

Continuing to build on two impressive win streaks in the process is like the cherry on top.

Heading into Sunday’s clash at Mosaic Stadium (2 p.m., TSN), the Stamps have cobbled together eight straight victories this season and have beaten Western opponents the last 15 times in a row.

Not too shabby.

“You prepare yourself to win every game whether it’s home or away and we understand that they all aren’t pretty,” said defensive line coach Corey Mace. “Whether it’s 10 or one there’s always going to be stuff to work on and that’s what drives us.

“At the end day if we were to win a hundred in a row (in the regular season), there’s no Grey Cups involved with that and we would have to go back to the drawing board.”

Putting together impressive streaks like the Stamps have is no small task in the CFL.

So what’s the secret to their success?

“We never thought that we’re the best team and we just have to show up to win games,” said running back Rob Cote. “That’s when you start to lose games when you think about yourself that way.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. The next game you’re going to be back at square one. You won’t be down on yourself or if you win one game you won’t think that you are the best team in the league. We stay level and focus on the games ahead of us.

“Eight in a row is special, but we don’t want to stop at eight.”

Mace has experienced the highs and lows of football as both a player and coach and admits that when the team gets on a roll like this, he enjoys it even more from the sidelines.

“As a coach, I get a lot more joy out of it because it’s special when you put together a good game plan and to see the guys clicking together rather than just focusing on individual stats,” he explained.

“They’re very special accomplishments, but every guy – whether coaches or players – will tell you that every game is important to win.”

One key to the recent run of success has been keeping an even keel, no matter how the game unfolds.

“It’s been all about consistency,” Cote said. “That’s what we preach about all the time. We want to be the same team we’ve always been and not hoping on the highs and dwelling on the lows; making sure to ride on the highs of momentum, and not fall off when that momentum fades. We try to do what we do every day and every play.”
