A Short, But Memorable Night for Larry Brihm

It was an unforgettable evening for quarterback Larry Brihm.

The rookie threw his very first CFL touchdown during a short cameo in the Stampeders 36-23 pre-season loss to the BC Lions.

When called upon in the third quarter, his first series did not go as he had hoped.

But after the nerves were out of the way, he knew what he had to do in his second drive.

After Brihm handed off to running back Terry Williams for a 19-yard rush, he managed to make a connection with wide receiver Marketih Ambles in the end-zone.

“My first drive I was just getting the jitters out, and then I was like ‘alright lets go’,” Brihm beamed.

“Coach told me slow it down, breathe, and take your time. When I got out there for the second drive, he gave me a couple of hand-offs, and I was like alright let’s do it – that led to a touchdown.”

After playing 41 games over four seasons (2014-17) at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL, Brihm admits the Canadian game is still taking some getting used to.

And being just two weeks into his CFL career, things are still a bit daunting.

“CFL compared to the United States; you don’t have twelve players and then they also can drop nine players into coverage,” he explained.

“You have to get used to the extra half, so it was just a tad bit different. Then knowing who’s blitzing, if it’s the sam (linebacker) or a halfback, so that was just the whole difference. But that front four, the D-lineman was nothing, I knew where they were.”

And the education on Canadian football has begun for Brihm, who’s got high aspirations for the northern league.

“I’m still learning, this is my first game here,” he shared. “I feel like I can be a big factor in the Canadian league, it’s just going to take time to learn everything.”

A sack and a time count penalty would finish up Brihm’s performance, and although he wishes it was a longer stint, it was a memorable seven snaps.

“I cherished what time they gave me,” said Brihm.

“I just thank god that I’m here, it’s another opportunity to play, so I’m happy about that.”

There’s no doubt that June 1, 2018, will become a treasured day for Brihm; the plays, the touchdown, and of course, the crowd of 24,681 fans at McMahon Stadium.

“For me, playing ball has always been my thing,” he said.

“I love the crowd, when the spotlight is on that’s when it actually comes in; the fans, hearing them cheer when it’s a big play – I love that stuff.”
