Training Camp Diary: Jerod Fernandez

I’m from Florida – right outside of Orlando – so the scenery is different, the atmosphere is different, and the weather is different. It’s something to get adjusted to, but the move to Calgary has been good so far.

Oh man, the first couples of days were terrible. I was coming from 90 degree weather in Florida, I was at the beach. I got off of the plane and I was in a jacket, sweats, it was a 40 degree swing. Then the following day was rainy and cold, I had like four sweaters on. At the end of the day, I was playing ball, so I was enjoying it and I’ll get used to it.

I was with the [Washington] Redskins last year for camp and when I got cut last year, Calgary actually called me and asked me to come here last year. I didn’t hop on it and I waited for something else to fall for me. Then in the off-season, I made the commitment that I was going to come and I’m enjoying it.

The field is a lot bigger up here. You don’t really notice it you’re out there chasing somebody down. What we’re doing here is similar to what I did in college, with four down lineman and two backers in the box at the same time. I’m able to relate things that I learn here to things that I learned in college, so it’s coming pretty easy for me defensively.

With the departures at linebacker, there’s a huge opportunity for me, but there’s lots of competition. I’m a linebacker, so I’ve got a lot of energy, I like to bring the juice, I like guys to feed off of me, so I’m going to bring it every day and every game.

If you spend some time at practice, you’ll hear me yell ‘Yessir’ more than once a day. It’s just something that I started doing. I’m a mike linebacker, I’m the quarterback of the defence, so if I’ve got energy, everybody has energy. So I come out every day with that big energy.

I’m just a junkyard dog, man. I like the grit, I like the trenches, I’ll go chase something down, I like to hit. I just have that chip on my shoulder, I have that edge to me. I’m going to give you everything I’ve got and when I get to you, you might want to get down because I’m coming in hard.
