Stamps Select Ogbongbemiga In First Round

The Calgary Stampeders have selected Oklahoma State linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga with the eighth overall pick in the 2021 Canadian Football League draft.

An alumnus of Calgary’s Notre Dame High School, Ogbongbemiga played 49 games over four seasons (2017-20) at Oklahoma State. He was voted second-team all-Big 12 and named his team’s defensive MVP in 2019 after recording 100 tackles including a team-leading 15.5 tackles for loss and was a four-time member of the all-Big 12 academic first team.

For his career with the Cowboys, Ogbongbemiga recorded 209 tackles including 25 tackles for loss, nine sacks, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, one interception and one blocked kick. He was named Oklahoma State’s top special-teams player in 2018 and was voted as a captain by his teammates during his final two seasons.

Ogbongbemiga’s older brother Alex played in the CFL for Saskatchewan, Edmonton and BC. The family moved from Nigeria to Houston, Tex., in 2003 before coming to Calgary in 2011. He majored in accounting at Oklahoma State.

Following the 2021 National Football League draft, Ogbongbemiga signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Calgary currently holds five other picks in the draft, which concludes later this evening.
