Stamps Saw Redblacks

In the win column.

The Calgary Stampeders improved their record to 1-1 with a 26-15 win in Ottawa against the Redblacks on Thursday night.

The Stamps were led be their defence to their first victory of 2023. Defensive back Branden Dozier picked up a fumble and took it into the house for the score and linebacker Micah Awe added a sack and an interception.

Stat Pack:

Jake Maier: 19-for-28 for 304-yards, one interception.

Dedrick Mills: 19-carries for 102-yards, one touchdown.

Reggie Begelton: eight receptions for 141-yards.

Micah Awe: four tackles, one sack, one interception.

The Stampeders defence took a few plays to get their legs under them on the first drive but came up with a huge stop on third-and-goal from the four-yardline to get the ball back to the offence.

After a Redblacks single, the Stamps forced a fumble on a punt and took the ball over on the Redblacks 21-yardline. A Malik Henry 18-yard play got the ball to the three before tailback Mills punched it in. The Stamps added a two-point convert to make the score 8-1 after the first-quarter.

Dozier made a huge play scooping up a Redblacks third-and-short fumble and taking it all the way to the endzone to make the score 15-1.

The Redblacks gained some momentum shortly after as they forced a fumble on a punt and took over at the Stampeders 11-yardline. They added a field-goal to make the score 15-4.

Ottawa looked for more as they picked off Maier just after the three-minute warning taking the ball just inside the Stamps 40-yardline.

But, on the very next play, Awe picked off Redblacks QB Nick Arbuckle to get the ball right back, it would not result in points.

The home team got on the board again as they returned a punt 79-yards and added the two-points to make the score 15-12 heading into the half.

Maier ended a long Stamps drive in the third-quarter diving over the pile into the endzone to make the score 22-12.

Ottawa got a big play late in the third-quarter to get into field-goal range but would miss from 45-yards out to making it 22-12 heading into the final quarter.

The Stamps started a drive under the shadows of their own goalposts but were able to move the ball down the field through the air getting to mid-field before having to punt the ball away that went into the endzone for a single with nine-minutes to go in the game. The score was 23-12.

The Redblacks would not go away as they moved the ball in the passing game leading to a short field-goal to make the score 23-15.

Maier found Henry for 56-yards on the first play after the Ottawa field-goal which set up a Stamps field-goal to make the score 26-15 with 2:30 to go.

Defensive back Tre Roberson grabbed an interception deep in Stamps territory late to put the game away.
