Stamps Lose OT Heart Breaker

In a game that saw eight lead changes, the Stampeders were unable to pick up the win against the Redblacks as they fell 43-41 in overtime.

The loss drops the Stamps to 2-4 on the season while Ottawa is now 3-3.

Receiver Marken Michel had two touchdowns to lead the way for the Stamps while SAM linebacker Titus Wall chipped in 11 tackles for the defence.

QB Jake Maier – 28-of-38 for 450-yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

RB Dedrick Mills – six rushes for 21-yards.

REC Marken Michel – 134-yards receiving and two touchdowns.

DL Julian Howsare – six tackles, one sack.

The Redblacks put together the first drive resulting in points on Sunday night as QB Dustin Crum and his offence marched down the field after a towering Cody Grace punt and were able to put up a field-goal to make the score 3-0.

The Stamps responded on their next drive as Jake Maier found rookie wideout Clark Barnes for 55-yards into the endzone. It was Barnes’ first CFL touchdown. Rene Paredes missed the extra point making the score 6-3.

The Redblacks made a big play just before the quarter ended as they picked off Maier and took it all the way back for a touchdown to make the score 10-6 heading into quarter number two.

Calgary fumbled a handoff to start the second-quarter leading to an Ottawa rushing touchdown. The score was 17-6.

The Stampeders put together a drive capped off by a Marken Michel touchdown to make it 17-13 halfway through the quarter. It was Michel’s first touchdown since returning to Calgary.

Canadians Cameron Judge and TJ Rayam had back-to-back sacks on the next Redblacks drive to force them to kick a field-goal making the score 20-13 with 3:35 to go in the half.

The Stamps got within four again as Paredes hit from 26-yards out to make the score 20-16 with just over two-minutes remaining.

They got the ball back one more time before the half. After a  big Tommylee Lewis return they were able to hit another field-goal making the score 20-19 at halftime.

The Red and White got in the endzone early in the third as Lewis had another great punt return which eventually led to Tommy Stevens punching the ball in from the one-yardline. Calgary was unsuccessful on the two-point attempt so the score was 25-20.

Rookie LeVante Bellamy blocked an Ottawa punt halfway through the quarter but were unable to get any points as they were stopped on third-and-short.

Ottawa regained the lead with a touchdown and got a two-point convert. The score would be 28-25 Redblacks heading into the final quarter.

Cody Grace booted a 67-yard punt single early in the quarter to make the score 28-26 with 10:54 to go.

The Stamps once again went ahead as Maier found Michel for a 95-yard score with eight-minutes to go. Calgary could not get the two-point convert so the score was 32-28.

Maier was picked off on the next Stampeders possession. The Redblacks drove the ball down the field leading to a passing touchdown from 20-yards out to make the score 35-32 Ottawa with 1:20 remaining.

The Stamps got into Paredes field-goal range as they kicked from the 46-yardline with under thirty seconds remaining. Paredes hit and tied the game 35-35 sending us to overtime.

Calgary started with the ball in the first overtime session. Maier found Begelton over the middle for a clutch first-down to get the Stampeders inside the 25-yardline. He then hit Odoms-Dukes in the endzone for 6. Calgary could not convert the two-point attempt. The Stamps lead 41-35.

Ottawa got the ball inside the five-yardline before running it in to tie the game 41-41. They got the two-point convert to sneak past the Stamps 43-41 in overtime.
