Stamps Rush Past Argonauts

Running back Dedrick Mills was a force for the Stampeders as they handed the Toronto Argonauts their first loss of the season 20-7 on Friday night in Calgary.

The win moves the Stampeders to 3-5 on the season while the Argos fall to 6-1.

STAT PACK

QB Jake Maier – 22-for-24 for 149-yards

RB Dedrick Mills – 27 carries for 137-yards

REC Tommylee Lewis – nine receptions for 58-yards

DB Jonathan Moxey – one interception, one knockdown

Mills came out of the gates hot – he touched the ball on all three of the Stamps plays on the first drive, rushing the ball for 16-yards and adding a three-yard reception before they ultimately punted.

After forcing a punt, the Stampeders started in Toronto territory. Following two first downs, the Stamps converted on third-and-one as Tommy Stevens powered the ball down to the one-yardline and then finished off the drive on his own to make the score 7-0 Calgary halfway through the first-quarter.

It only took the Argonauts two plays to respond as Chad Kelly found Cam Phillips for a 66-yard touchdown to make the score 7-7. That was the score following the first.

The two defences held tight until five-minutes to go in the second-quarter when the Stampeders crossed half and Rene Paredes hit a 45-yard field-goal to make the score 10-7.

The Boatmen were driving deep into Calgary territory before Jonathan Moxey picked off Cameron Dukes, who came in for an injured Kelly, in the endzone to give the Stampeders the ball with just under two-minutes left in the half.

Calgary had to punt, but the Argonauts returner fumbled the ball into the endzone and rookie Michael Griffin jumped on the ball for a touchdown with no time left on the clock to make the score 17-7 heading into half-time.

The Stamps were successful on a roughing the passer challenge as Maier was hit high and late on a second-down. The overturned call continued the Calgary drive which eventually turned into a 42-yard field-goal to make the score 20-7.

The two teams would hold strong on defence as they traded punts and it would be 20-7 heading into the final quarter.

Dedrick Mills crossed over the 100-yard rushing mark as the Stamps worked the clock early in the final frame but they were unable to add any points to the board.

Toronto punted the ball away after a Mike Rose sack on their next drive with under four-minutes to go deep in their own territory but Lewis fumbled the return and the Argonauts got the ball back at the Stampeders 50-yardline.

Mills continued to rip up the Argonaut defence after Toronto could not gain a first down on third-and-two and he all but put the game away with back-to-back first down runs. The Stamps put an end to the Argonauts undefeated season with a 20-7 win.
