The Calgary Stampeders have added American defensive lineman George Obinna and national defensive back Malcolm Thompson to their practice roster.

Obinna is returning to the Stampeders after seeing action in two regular-season games for Calgary in 2022. He recorded two defensive tackles.

Obinna signed with the National Football League’s Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and spent time on the Atlanta Falcons’ practice roster in 2021.

In college, Obinna played 46 games over five years at Sacramento State. He earned all-Big Sky first-team honours in both 2017 and 2019 and amassed 136 tackles including 47 tackles for loss, 33.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries over the course of his career with the Hornets.

Thompson attended training camp with the Stampeders in 2021 and played two games with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2021 and 10 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2022. He has 23 career defensive tackles, seven special-teams stops and one fumble recovery.

Thompson was a three-time Ontario University Athletics all-star at Wilfrid Laurier University, earning first-team honours in 2016 and a second-team nod in both 2015 and 2019. He was also a first-team all-Canadian in 2016. In 31 career games for the Golden Hawks, he recorded 120.5 total tackles, nine interceptions, two sacks, eight knockdowns, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He also returned nine punts for 56 yards and one kickoff for 27 yards. Thompson added 11 tackles and one interception in two career playoff games.
