About Last Night…

Here is a closer look at Saturday’s 27-13 home-field win over the BC Lions:

Great eight

The Stamps have won eight games in a row, the longest winning streak in the CFL this season.

It’s the second year in a row Calgary has put together at least eight straight victories – the 2016 Stamps had a 14-game winning streak.

Prior to 2016, the most recent eight-game, same-season winning streak by Calgary was accomplished by the 1994 team.

Passing the West test

Thanks to the win over the Lions, the Red and White have now rattled off 15 straight victories against division foes.

That’s the longest winning streak within the West since interdivisional play began in 1961 and matches the 1996-97 Toronto Argonauts for most consecutive wins within any division.

During the current run of victories against the West, the Stamps are 4-0 against BC, Edmonton and Winnipeg and 3-0 against Saskatchewan.

McMahon magic continues

Yet another streak was extended on Saturday as the Stamps have pushed their run of consecutive home victories to 16.

It’s the longest home winning streak in the CFL in two decades – the 1996-97 Argos won 17 in a row on home turf – and is tied for the fifth-longest in league history. The CFL record of 27 straight home wins was set by Calgary from 1992-95.

Exactly six years ago – Sept. 17, 2011 – the Stamps dropped a 32-19 decision at home against BC. Since that date, Calgary is 48-6 at McMahon including a 15-1 mark in September home dates.

D-lightful

The defence continues to do plenty of heavy lifting for the Red and White.

After allowing 110 total points in the season’s first four games, the Stamps have yielded a total of just 112 points during the eight-game winning streak.

Saturday marked the sixth time this season the Stamps won despite scoring fewer than 30 points. Calgary had just two such wins in all of 2016.

The defence has been particularly dominant at McMahon Stadium, allowing four touchdowns and a total of just 49 points in the past five home dates.

Holding down the fort early

The Stamps have been particularly stingy in the early going so far in 2017.

BC managed only a punt single in the first quarter on Saturday and then just a field goal in the second quarter. The Stamps have allowed just five first-half touchdowns in the first half all season and have cumulatively outscored opponents 192-96 in the first 30 minutes of games.

The opposition has managed just one major in the first quarter and that came on Aug. 3 in Toronto after the Argonauts started a drive at the Stamps’ 32-yard line following a fumbled punt.

Pick party

Ciante Evans, Shaquille Richardson and Jameer Thurman all recorded interceptions for the Stamps on Saturday, allowing Calgary to tie the Winnipeg Blue Bombers – who are on a bye this week – for the league lead with 16 picks as a team.

Overall in the turnover department, the Stamps have 30 takeaways this season compared to just 11 giveaways in 12 games. Calgary is on a pace to break the franchise record for fewest turnovers committed in a season – 26, which was established by last year’s club – as well as the CFL record of 23 set by the 2012 Lions.

Almost at triple digits

Saturday’s win ensures that the Stamps’ run of games without suffering back-to-back losses will reach at least 100.

Since losing in Week 2 and Week 3 of the 2012 campaign, the Stamps have gone 79-18-2 over a 99-game stretch with no consecutive defeats.

The previous CFL record was long ago passed as the Edmonton Eskimos went 51 games without back-to-back losses from the start of the 1979 season to Week 4 of the 1982 schedule.

Since Week 4 of the 2012 season, there have been 138 instances of a CFL team losing back-to-back regular-season games but none by Calgary.

Grand season for returner

Thanks to 174 yards on Saturday, Roy Finch is the first player in Stamps history to accumulate more than 1,000 punt-return yards in a season.

Finch now has 1,009 punt-return yards this season as he breaks his own team record of 993 set a year ago. Incredibly, the University of Oklahoma alum heads into Sunday’s action with a 405-yard advantage on Ottawa’s Diontae Spencer for the league lead in punt-return yardage.

Finch is just the fourth player to reach the 1,000-yard mark in punt returns in the past decade – Montreal’s Stefan Logan did it in each of the past two seasons while Chris Williams (with Hamilton in 2012) and Chad Owens (with Toronto in 2010) have also accomplished the feat.

The CFL record for punt-return yards in a single season is 1,440, which was established by Edmonton’s Henry (Gizmo) Williams in 1991.

Triple double

Saturday’s game featured a matchup of two of the CFL’s preeminent middle linebackers and tackling machines – Alex Singleton of the Stampeders and Solomon Elimimian of the Lions.

Singleton edged out Elimimian 11-10 in tackles on Saturday and the duo now shares the league lead for the season with 91 takedowns apiece.

Singleton has 35 tackles over the past three games and has reached double digits in each contest. He’s the first CFL player to record at least 10 defensive tackles for three consecutive games since the stat was first officially tracked starting in 1987.

Since 2009, there have been eight double-digit tackle games by a Stamp and Singleton owns five of them. The second-year player is on track to break the franchise record for tackles in a season (116 by George White in 2005) and the CFL mark for most takedowns by a Canadian (113 by Toronto’s Kevin Eiben, also in 2005).
