To many, they go unnoticed.

But trust us – the Stampeders’ special teams unit is not to be overlooked.

It was an exceptional outing for the squad in the Red & White’s 34-22 victory over the Roughriders in Regina last Saturday.

To start, special teams coverage kept the Riders to just  4.8 yards average on punt returns, in comparison to the Stamps’ average of 18.5.

“The Roughriders have got great returning, a great scheme, and they’ve got some great players blocking for Christian Jones,” said special teams coach Mark Kilam. “And our guys rose up to the challenge. It was a battle, we knew it was going to be a battle all night, and our guys did a good job.”

Running back Charlie Power was integral in keeping the return average low, as he tallied three special teams tackles on the game.

“Charlie’s been our best big four, big body banger for years now,” said Kilam.

“He can win one-on-one matchups, he can get vertical, he can make plays at the point-of-attack, and he’s also a really big guy. When you put all of that together it makes a pretty good football player, especially on special teams.”

“It’s hard to get that many tackles,” said Power. “Because we have so many guys that are just beasts on special teams.

“Everyone’s playing, and everyone’s getting up-field. Last game was good, we were getting vertical and getting a really good returner down.”

Offensively, the squad was making a tangible difference on the scoreboard; as 16 of the Stamps’ points were attributed to the special teams unit.

Kicker Rene Paredes nailed two field goals in the game, including a long 52-yard attempt in the first quarter.

“Rene has a great leg, and he’d love to kick all the long kicks,” Kilam said. “But we have a great going in punter, Rob Maver, as well.

“Sometimes we like to play the field positions game, but when it gets into the territory and we need the points we’ll go for it.”

Less than three minutes after that kick, Terry Williams returned a punt 78-yards to the house, his second of the season.

“We won a lot of one-on-ones on that play, our guys did a great job on the gunners.” said Kilam.

“Terry took the space, and when Terry does that and presses without hesitation he’s scary.”

The unit will look to keep up their success this Saturday, as they take on the BC Lions at McMahon Stadium.

“They’re probably the most physical group we’ll play,” said Power.

“Facing Chris Rainey, he can hurt you anywhere on the field, he can take it back to the house. We’ll have to get bodies on top and get him down.”

“They’ve got some new personnel that are blocking really well, and they’ve got one of the best returners in the CFL behind them – when you put that together it’s a dangerous combination.

“It’s going to be a battle.”
