Holding Court

We’re almost halfway through the season and it seems fair to say first-year Stampeder Cameron Judge has made quite the impression on his new team.

There’s no doubt the off-season trade in February that saw defensive back Royce Metchie head to Toronto in exchange for the linebacker is certainly paying off.

After seeing little playing time in 2021, Judge has integrated seamlessly with the Calgary defensive unit. In only eight games, Judge leads the team in tackles this season with 40. In just nine games played with the Argos last season, Judge tallied a total of 13 defensive stops.

Additionally, Judge has also recorded two sacks, an interception, a forced fumble and a touchdown this year.

Where does the success come from?

For Judge, it’s quite simple.

“Just being out there makes it easier to get it done,” he said.

Although he’s quiet when talking about himself, the fifth-year player holds nothing back when sharing about his teammates. With veteran MLB Jameer Thurman on the six-game injury list, Judge is confident that second-year LB Silas Stewart can fill No. 56’s role.

“The good thing is just the fact that he comes to work every day and he has since day one,” he said. “He’s been waiting for an opportunity and now that it’s here he’s been ready and I have all the trust in the world in him next to me.”

Judge has also been impressed by the work of rookie Titus Wall, who plays the hybrid cover linebacker position.

“The same goes for Titus,” said the UCLA product. “He’s a rookie, but he’s come in not looking like a rookie, even in camp. He’s shown it on the field and the way he prepares.

“It’s a pleasure to take the field with them.”

It’s no secret there are plenty of coaches in Double Blue who have ties to Calgary, a group that includes Corey Mace, Pete Costanza and Joshua Bell. There are also numerous ex-Stamps in the Argos’ playing ranks.

There is sure to be some familiarity between the clubs on Saturday and the Argonaut-turned-Stampeder is feeling prepared to face his old squad.

“I think we’re going to see some things we’ve probably seen throughout the league already,
said Judge. “I know their (running) back’s hurt but they’ve got capable backups as well, so we just have to stay ready in both phases of the game and execute.”

As the Stamps prepare for the upcoming road trip, it will be imperative for the team to dig their heels in as the Boatmen lead the league in fourth-quarter points this season with 78.

“It comes down to us being disciplined,” he said. “Obviously in the fourth quarter, you might be a little fatigued or whatever the situation might be, just (keep) pushing yourself and stay disciplined.”
