Stamps Rein In Elks

Perfect Preseason.

The Stamps secured a 37-7 victory over the Edmonton Elks Friday evening at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Red and White defeated their opponents for a combined score of 78-13 in the preseason.

Notable veterans stayed home -including Bo Levi Mitchell, Rene Paredes, Reggie Begelton, and more- while many rookies competed for a permanent spot on the roster before cuts are made this weekend.

Dedrick Mills had himself a night, recording 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 67 yard burst in the third quarter.

The Stamps maintained control throughout the game and never let up the lead.

It appears that punt blocks are becoming a pre-season theme for the Red and White.

George Obinna put the team in great field position to start their first drive of the night after blocking the Elks punt. The Stamps took care of business and marched down the field for 35 yards, followed by a Tommy Stevens goal line plunge.

Jake Maier started under centre and had near perfect accuracy throwing the ball. He went 6/7 for 59 yards in the few reps he took Saturday night.

The rest of the first half would be left to Tommy Stevens. Although the stat sheet shows Stevens going 1/8 in passing, he put his six-foot-five and 245lb stature to work. Stevens extended their second drive of the night with a quarterback sneak on 3rd down. Keiran Burnham completed the drive with a 32-yard field goal to increase the lead 10-0.

The big QB then proved he could make plays with his legs and scampered for 42 yards. He would finish his pre-season campaign with 61 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Dedrick Mills scurried for 25 yards and found pay-dirt a few plays later. Burnham added the extra point to make the score 17-0 before the half. Following a missed field goal by the Elks, Mills picked up where he left off in the third quarter. After his explosive 67-yard rush, he punched the ball in to increase Calgary’s lead to 22 points.

Chase Fourcade would take over the second half for the Red and White. Fourcade would find Juston Christian in the endzone for 27 yards in the fourth quarter. Fourcade finished the day going 4/6 on 63 passing yards, and rushed for 16 yards.

Starting at safety, Raheem Wilson picked the ball on the Elks following drive, setting the Stamps up for another Keiran Burnham field goal.

The Elks found the endzone with 5:45 to go in the fourth quarter to make the score 37-7.

Kobe Williams called game. He intercepted Kai Locksley’s Hail Mary pass in the endzone with zeros on the clock to cap off the pre-season for both clubs.
