Defensive Domination Leads to Win

The Stampeders picked up a win against the East-Leading Argos on Saturday night at McMahon by a score of 29-2.

The win keeps Calgary tied with BC for second in the West at 10-5.

Calgary’s defence was outstanding once again finishing the night with two sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and one touchdown.

Jake Maier went 17-for-24 for 175 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Ka’Deem Carey ran the ball 14 times for 92-yards and one touchdown.

Reggie Begelton had four catches for 43-yards and a touchdown.

On defence, Cam Judge led the way with six tackles and a pick-six.

It was a slow start on Saturday night, the first quarter saw six straight punts.

Maier found some momentum late in the quarter and found Richie Sindani twice for first-downs, but threw an interception on the next set of downs. The quarter ended 0-0.

Toronto would get on the board early in the second quarter though only a punt single to make the score 1-0.

Calgary fiund life on the next Argos drive. Jameer Thurman picked off McLeod Bethel-Thompson and returned the ball to the Toronto 23-yardline.

Maier would need just two plays to get the ball into the endzone as he found Begelton from 16-yards for the touchdown. It was 7-1 Stamps with 10:58 to go in the half.

Toronto would get another single on their next drive after Boris Bede missed a 46-yard field-goal to make the score 7-2.

The Stamps scored a major on their second straight drive after the miss. Carey ran the ball for 19-yards down to the Toronto 25-yardline before Maier hit Begelton at the two. Tommy Stevens punched it in on second-down making the score 14-2 Stampeders heading into halftime.

Both teams traded punts for the first 13-minutes of the third quarter with the biggest play being an Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund second-down sack to force an Argonauts punt.

Toronto had one more chance at points before the quarter ended but Terrell McClain and Shawn Lemon combined to sack Bethel-Thompson again, forcing another punt. It stayed 14-2 heading into the final quarter.

Calgary had a drive down to the Toronto 35-yardline to start the fourth-quarter but Maier was intercepted for the second time in the game ending the drive.

Toronto started from their own seven-yardline after a beautiful 50-yard punt from Cody Grace. They overcame the tough field position, getting the ball near midfield but Judge jumped a Bethel-Thompson pass and took it back 71-yards for a touchdown to make the score 21-2 with under five minutes to go.

Chad Kelly came in at quarterback for Toronto on their final couple of drives. They turned the ball over on downs in his first appearance.

Calgary put the finishing touches on a dominating win with a 55-yard drive that was finished off by a Carey touchdown making the score 28-2.

They weren’t quite done as the ensuing kickoff went into the endzone for a single point to make the score 29-2.

The game was finished with a Branden Dozier interception.
